EU citizens can travel freely without a visa, but should obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and, after three months in Greece, register with the local police for a Registration Certificate, possibly providing proof of sufficient funds. Non-EU citizens must purchase private health insurance, secure a Type D student visa from a Greek Embassy or Consulate, and apply online for a student residence permit within 90 days of arrival. They also need to show proof of financial resources, obtain a Tax Identification Number (AFM), and open a Greek bank account. Upon arrival, all students must register at the university, create an online student account, apply for an Academic ID card, and may find it useful to purchase a Greek SIM card for local communication.
To apply for a Greek student visa, you’ll need: a completed visa application form from the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a valid passport issued within the last 10 years, with at least two blank pages and valid for three months beyond your planned stay. You must also provide a recent criminal record certificate from your country of residence, a medical certificate from an accredited institution confirming you are free of diseases posing a public health risk, and travel insurance covering the full visa duration, including repatriation, emergency care, and hospitalization. Additional documentation may be requested if you have lived abroad or previously in Greece.
The applicant must appear in person at the nearest Hellenic consular authority (Embassy or Consulate) and:
- submit a complete application along with the required general documents,
- be interviewed by the Consul or a designated official, in order to establish the purpose of their entry and stay in Greece,
- pay the applicable fees as per national legislation,
- consent to the collection of biometric data
